Shailesh (Sylesh) is a painter, educator, and interior designer whose creative career has spanned more than four decades across India and the United States.
For 25 years, he served as a Professor of Fine Arts and Head of Department, teaching painting, drawing, portraiture, life drawing, printmaking, mosaic, Indian fresco techniques, and a broad range of media. Alongside his academic career, he maintained an active studio practice, exhibiting his work in solo and group exhibitions in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, and beyond.
His work has received numerous honors, including three Gujarat State Fine Art Academy Awards for Drawing, four Bombay Art Society National Awards, and three Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Art Exhibition awards.
His artistic understanding of color, proportion, composition, and space later extended into a 20-year career in interior design, with projects in both India and the United States. Rather than existing separately from his fine art practice, design further developed his sensitivity to the relationship between an artwork, its environment, and the people who experience it.
In recent years, Shailesh has entered a renewed period of concentrated studio practice and exhibition in the United States. His work was featured in the Darshan Art Exhibition with the Tennessee Valley Art Association in 2022–2023, followed by the Tennessee Valley Traveling Exhibition at museums and galleries during 2023–2024. In 2025, he participated in a two-person painting exhibition at Gallery at El Sendero in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as well as an Alabama artist retreat bringing together artists of Indian heritage.
Working primarily in oil and watercolor, Shailesh explores human emotion through color, form, expression, and observation. His work resists prescribing a single narrative. Instead, he invites each viewer to bring their own memories and emotions to the encounter.
For him, art should be felt before it is explained.
The art itself becomes the story.
